Brazilian football has produced some of the most fascinating players in history. But for many of them, the sporting legend eventually clashed with another reality: that of investigations, trials, and convictions.
A look back at several Brazilian players whose careers were derailed by justice...
Robinho, from Santos prodigy to prison

Robinho long symbolized the joyful, technical, and unpredictable Brazil. Discovered at Santos, he then played for Real Madrid, Manchester City, and AC Milan, having a star European and international career.
His name is now mainly associated with his legal case in Italy. Convicted of gang rape by the Italian justice system, the sentence was later upheld at the highest level, before Brazilian justice decided in 2024 that he should serve his nine-year prison sentence in Brazil. To learn more about the Robinho case, we have written a full article about this player.
Bruno, the former star goalkeeper whose name remains linked to a chilling crime

Before the tragedy, Bruno Fernandes de Souza was one of the most famous goalkeepers in Brazilian football, particularly at Flamengo, where he held true star status. His downfall was brutally swift. In 2013, he was sentenced to 22 years in prison for his involvement in the murder of his ex-partner Eliza Samudio, a case that deeply shocked Brazil.
He would only serve 6 years in prison, as Brazilian justice allowed him to complete the remainder of his sentence under house arrest. Each of his attempts to return to football reignited public outrage, as this case remains one of the most sordid to have affected a known Brazilian player.
Ronaldinho, the global icon caught up in the fake passport affair

Seeing Ronaldinho in a legal matter seemed almost surreal, as his public image was so tied to joy, smiles, and the beautiful game. Yet, in 2020, the former Ballon d'Or winner was arrested in Paraguay after entering the country with a falsified document. The affair turned into an international saga: detention, house arrest, then a negotiated legal outcome. Reuters reported that a Paraguayan judge eventually accepted a conditional suspension of prosecution, which allowed Ronaldinho to return to Brazil, with a fine of $90,000.
This was not a conviction comparable to the most serious cases on this list, but rather a major judicial episode in the image downfall of an immense star.
Adriano, the broken destiny

Adriano remains one of the greatest sporting tragedies in modern Brazilian football. Nicknamed "The Emperor", he had everything: power, finishing, charisma, popular aura. But his career collapsed long before his official retirement, amidst personal dramas, instability, and a gradual distancing from the very highest level.
On the judicial front, his name resurfaced in 2014 when he was targeted by accusations linked to drug trafficking in Rio. He had been implicated by prosecutors, but a few days later a judge dismissed the case due to insufficient evidence to proceed to trial. His case therefore falls more under public suspicion and an abandoned procedure than a conviction, but it contributes to this image of a destiny gone wrong.
